Welcome to the Centre for Scottish Studies

Please join us for a free lecture by Sir Tom Devine on October 15th at the Harbour Centre campus!

Founded in 1998 as a joint venture between faculty and individuals in the community, the Centre for Scottish Studies at Simon Fraser University provides a focal point for faculty, students and members of the general public who are interested in exploring Scottish history and culture and connections between Scotland and Canada in the contemporary global landscape.

The Centre promotes teaching, research and community programming in the area of Scottish Studies. Our activities include non-credit and credit instruction, the “Scots in BC” and “Scottish Voices from the West Oral History" projects, an annual St. Andrews and Caledonian Society talk, as well as colloquia, conferences, and a visiting speakers series. We offer an annual scholarship to a graduate student working in the area of Scottish Studies, and, as the only institution in Western Canada with a Scottish Studies focus, we collaborate with other academic institutions in Canada interested in Scottish Studies. Our location in the vibrant multicultural city of Greater Vancouver also allows us to foster a variety of international connections. Our aim is to become a centre of excellence in Scottish Studies, linking scholars from across both the Atlantic and Pacific.
